REFLECTION IN LINKEDIN LEARNING COURSE:PowerPoint for Teachers:Creating Interactive Lessons(Prelims)

Updated: Apr 30, 2021

Generation Z learners are considered as the most intelligent and talented generation among all the other generations. The main reason for this would be their privilege to access to a massive in just one click away. This is the gift of digital media and internet. Generation Z learners can learn a variety of information, knowledge, ideas, and skills based on what they need and want. Thus, teachers’ job and role are not to become the central source of information. The teacher is the facilitator, guide, and encourager of the learning process of the students. The teacher must create an environment stimulates the students to become collaborative, creative, and critical thinker.

In her LinkedIn Learning Course PowerPoint for Teachers: Creating Interactive Lessons, Faith Brill discussed the usefulness of PowerPoint in creating a learning environment that stimulates students’ interaction and creativity. She began the course with the discussion of active learning. She said that retention rate of the students becomes higher when they are actively involved in the learning process. She provided certain activities that teachers can take advantage of while using PowerPoint. She demonstrated how to conduct an inquiry-based activity where teachers can generate questions and put it on the PowerPoint that they can consistently ask to the students throughout the learning proper.

Another activity that Faith Brill discussed is the image analysis. Teachers can search images related to the topic that they will discuss, put it on the PowerPoint, and ask the students to come up with their observations regarding the images. She also explained the use of interactive debate. Teachers must think a set of topics, include it on the PowerPoint and present it during the discussion. By allowing the students to argue with each other concerning a specific issue or problem, teachers immerse the students to the societal conditions of their community. Hence, teachers can also ask the students to come up with their own solutions to solve the issues and problems. By doing this, teacher can develop critical thinking skills to the students and the essence of becoming responsible and active citizens of their respective communities.

This is the beauty of using PowerPoint. The activities that I included here are just some of the activities that she discussed in the LinkedIn Course. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of things that you can do with the PowerPoint. You just need to be creative and take advantage of the privilege of searching on the internet. If students are always learning and accessing information through the internet, then we should also speed up our way of learning through these avenues and tools. We are the guide of the students in this age of information. However, how can we be the guide if we are not doing the effort and hard work to explore the world of technologies where our learners live and thrive.
